Schools and Capping in San Antonio Texas

Any home buyer who has children of school age is always concerned with the school district and the schools that the child may be attending. One of the biggest mistakes a home buyer can make is purchase a home based on the schools listed on MLS (multiple listing service).

Though San Antonio REALTORS® do their best to input information that is provided according to the home seller, the current homeowner may not have school aged children residing with them, and even if they do, the school may be capped. When a school is “capped” it is at capacity or in some cases, over capacity.

What does this mean to you? According to the Texas Education Agency, the limit for Texas school classes is 22 pupils. With the current growth rate of San Antonio, it has become a challenge to ensure there are enough public schools for San Antonio students. Often times a student will have to be transported to a different school that has not reached its capacity. This means that even though your school aged child has a school a block or two away from the home you recently purchased, and the boundary map shows the child would attend that specific school; you may find the child is traveling to a school that is a few miles away.

Always check the school boundaries for the specific home you are planning to purchase if this is a concern for you. Never make the assumption that the information provided by the home seller is valid. They may have thought it was, and even if the home seller does have school aged children, the school boundaries can change from year to year, depending on city growth and the addition of new schools.
