CALL UTILITY COMPANIES (one-two weeks before moving)

  1. CPS, water, telephone, cable, fuel & garbage co's. to transfer service over to new owner (don't turn off fuel, just transfer)
  2. Pay bills and get refunds on any deposits made.  

Prior To Leaving:

Address change

  1. Post Office: Give forwarding address.
  2. Charge accounts, credit cards, AAA
  3. Subscriptions: Several weeks notice required, Local newspapers and magazines
  4. Friends and relatives

Bank

  1. Transfer funds, arrange check-cashing in new city.
  2. Arrange credit references. Obtain certified check necessary for NEW    home
  3. Obtain certified check necessary for NEW home

 Insurance -- Notify company of new location for coverage:

  1. Life
  2. Health
  3. Homeowners
  4. Auto

Delivery Service

  1. Laundry, newspaper, changeover of services

Medical, Dental, Prescription History

  1. Ask Doctors and Dentists for referrals; transfer needed RX's, eyeglasses, X-rays. Obtain birth certificates, medical records, etc.

Pets

  1. Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags

...And Don't Forget To:

  1. Empty and defrost freezer; plan use of food
  2. Clean refrigerator and places charcoal to despel odors.
  3. Have appliances serviced for moving.
  4. Arrange for TV cable and / antenna.
  5. Clean rugs or clothing before moving; have them "moving wrapped".
  6. Check with your mover; insurance coverage, packing and unpacking costs, arrival date, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment.
  7. Plan for special care needs of infants, and pets. 

On Moving Day:

  1. Carry enough cash or traveler's checks to cover cost of moving services.
  2. Carry jewelry and documents yourself.
  3. Double check closets, drawers, shelves, cellar to be sure they are empty

 Once At Your New Address

  1. Check service on telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
  2. Have new address recorded on drivers' license and apply for new if applicable
  3. Register cars within 30 days arriving in new address or you may incur a penalty
  4. Visit city offices to register to vote.
  5. Register children in school
  6. Arrange for medical services
